Nicholas Heinamann

Founder and Director

Nicholas is the founder and principal director of Afristar Foundation. His primary passion is developing sustainable development strategies to empower Africans to create an abundant reality. He believes that Permaculture Design and Planning offers an accelerated platform to reformulate the way we collectively do business on planet Earth, focusing on economic growth within a socially just and ecologically sound framework. Nicholas is responsible for programme conception, fundraising, project management and reporting for all Afristar projects.

Lindsay Dozoretz

Natural Resources and Food Security Specialist

Lindsay has been involved in food security work and sustainable development projects for over 10 years, working in communities in Brazil, Senegal, Mozambique, Uganda and the U.S.  She holds a dual M.A. in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, and International Affairs, and received her Permaculture Design Certificate from the Permaculture Institute in New Mexico in 2007.  Lindsay is involved in strategic planning and programme design for Afristar, and has a hand in many other projects , including training facilitation and the development of Afristar’s educational resources.

Bonita Edwards

Permaculture Artist & Designer

Bonita works as Afristar’s main graphic artist and designer, helping to implement permaculture programmes and environmental education using art as a tool for communication and empowerment. She has a great love and passion for Africa and enjoys getting involved with people and communities to bring out their highest aspirations. Among other successes, Bonita has developed murals to support the Mamelodi Greening programme, and worked with the Kuthama-Sintumule community to transform plain bus stops in rural Limpopo into fabulous displays of community permaculture art.  Bonita is the artistic talent behind Afristar’s poster series and our educational resources graphics, some of which can be seen on this website.

John Nzira

Community Programme Implementation

John is an inspiringly committed and motivated hands-on permaculture and agricultural food security trainer. A people person with a passion for human resource management and community upliftment, John brings to Afristar superb project management skills, from program conception, fundraising, planning, financial control, and implementation, to follow-up evaluation, monitoring and mentoring.  Most recently, John has been involved in training and site development at the Light of Mercy Community Center project in northern Limpopo.

Tina De Waal

Programme Facilitator & Permaculture Trainer

Tina works with Afristar on Permaculture training and implementation. She completed her permaculture design course at Wild Rock farm in 1998, and along with contributing to numerous community programs, runs her own nursery, and develops organic food gardens in Gauteng. She is an invaluable asset to Afristar’s programs in Gauteng and Limpopo, and is an exceptional mentor and trainer. She has a great love for plants and brings an incredible reservoir of botanical knowledge to Afristar’s on-ground programming.

Elin Lindhagen

Permaculture Researcher – Kenya

Based in Kenya, Elin brings a passion for social justice and participatory development to Afristar.  Her skills in creative facilitation and community work help to advise Afristar project strategies, and her involvement with the Permaculture Research Institute – Kenya provides a link to parallel initiatives in East Africa.  Elin is also a trained permaculture educator and facilitator and has been involved in various grassroots community development projects for sustainability around the world.

Jabu Mthombeni

Environmental Educator & Project Organizer

Jabu is a young, hardworking, career-driven and highly motivated environmental worker. Well-organized, a fast learner, and adaptable, Jabu is able to deal gracefully with the pressures of deadlines, and brings his problem solving skills to programme delivery. Currently working in the Mamelodi Greening Programme, he is particularly inspired by community work, and truly believes in the power of working together to achieve more.

Sibusiso Ndlovu

Programme Leader & Environmental Educator

An environmental educator based in Mamelodi, Gauteng, Sibusiso has keen observation skills and is great with people and groups.  Having completed his PDC in 2011 at the Klein Karoo Drylands Permaculture Institute, Sibusiso now augments his community development work with permaculture skills.  Sibusiso is involved in environmental education and community greening programmes.
