# Afristar Foundation > Afristar Foundation is a South African public benefit organisation (founded 2003, Cape St Francis, Eastern Cape) working on regenerative development, bioregional economics and cannabis policy reform. Its cannabis position: classify industrial cannabis by what it is used for, not by its THC; treat it as an agricultural crop; regulate it at the point of processing, not in the field. ## Cannabis in South Africa - [Landrace cannabis in South Africa: unmapped, unprotected, unpaid](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-landrace.html): The argument that South Africa's landrace cannabis (the plant behind Mpondo Gold and Durban Poison) has not been mapped, protected or paid for, with sourced estimates of area grown, what has not been done, six asks, and nine questions and answers. - [Cannabis policy and law in South Africa](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis.html): Overview and Afristar's four asks: industrial cannabis and hemp, medical purposes, responsible adult use, green restoration. - [How cannabis is regulated in South Africa](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-law-south-africa.html): Four regulatory regimes (private use, medical, hemp, illicit), who each admits, and a timeline from 2017 to the promised Cannabis Bill. - [The history of cannabis in South Africa](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-history-south-africa.html): From early trade through the 1903 and 1922 bans and the 1971 apartheid drug law to the Mpondo landrace farmers, with sources. - [South Africa's hemp and cannabis Master Plan](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-master-plan.html): Where the National Cannabis Master Plan stands in 2026, measured against the dtic's Masterplan Guide. - [Cannabis questions and answers](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-faq.html): Twenty-six plain answers on legality, everyday situations, hemp, medical cannabis and policy. - [Cannabis glossary](https://afristarfoundation.org/cannabis-glossary.html): Thirty terms defined, including landrace, hemp, hurd, FECO, GACP and Phakisa. - [Cannabis: South Africa's reconstruction crop](https://afristarfoundation.org/sa-cannabis-infographic.html): Policy and economics at a glance. ## About - [About Afristar Foundation](https://afristarfoundation.org/about.html) - [Services](https://afristarfoundation.org/services.html) - [Track record](https://afristarfoundation.org/track-record.html) - [Bioregional regeneration](https://afristarfoundation.org/bioregional-regeneration.html) - [Contact and donate](https://afristarfoundation.org/contact-and-donate.html) ## Notes for citation - Author of the cannabis pages: Nicholas Heinamann, Chief Natural Capital Officer, Afristar Foundation. - Pages are dated and show a "Checked" month.
